About the School
Mejocama School, founded in 2012, is located in the Eastern part of Zambia in Chipata Diocese. There are over 500 students, from pre-school to Grade 12 and the teaching staff consists of over 32 teachers.
Founded by Cardinal Merdado Joseph Mazombwe, the Good Shepherd sisters opened the school in response to a substantial demand from the community around Foxdale. The school mission responds to the local community who could not access the educational services in existing government institutions or private schools due to limited places or exorbitant school fees. Mejocama offers a quality and affordable education for this vulnerable community.
Mejocama School is at the service of children from the vulnerable compounds of Ng`ombe, Kabanana, Kasisi and Ngwelere, Lusaka, where are over 200 vulnerable and orphaned children. The establishment of the school was approved by Ministry of Education in order to facilitate positive change in this society.
Now, with a high demand for places, the school offers a welcoming and caring community for its pupils where each individual feels welcome, safe and valued. Pupils are taught nurturing attitudes and values whilst dedicated teachers inspire a love of learning. Children are taught that they can make a positive change in the community they live in, just as their predecessors have, and are taught the lifelong skills of questioning and problem solving.
The Challenges
The staff and pupils at the school face many daily challenges which include;
battling against inadequate infrastructure, limited access to teaching and learning equipment and sustainable staff salaries.
16 are paid salaries by government while the other half (16) are remunerated by the community through small school fees paid and in most cases, these teachers go unpaid for some months since some parents are unable to contribute towards the remuneration of our teachers. There are over 200 vulnerable and orphaned children who need support for their education and sustenance.
