Year four across the trust have had an incredibly busy Autumn term, with some exciting topics to help generate some fantastic writing. As part of their ongoing ‘Hans Christian Andersen’ project, Year 4 have been looking at different forms of writing, such as their Tin Soldier letter and their Fairy Tale inspired fictional writing. To help enrich their vocabulary and encourage a diverse use of language, they have been combining art and storytelling to captivate them and immerse them into the life of Hans Christian.
As part of this cross-curricular focus, Miss Farrant visited Broadclyst, Yeo Valley and Westclyst to deliver an unforgettable session. She told the story of ‘The Snow Queen’ – the inspiration for the Disney film ‘Frozen’, whilst creating a Papercut of Elsa. The children were awestruck, as were all the teachers and staff, and they thoroughly enjoyed taking an interactive role in the story through the use of props and drama.
All the children were captivated by the retelling of the story, not solely because of the art, but because they felt part of the story. As a result, this had a huge impact on their work, especially the quality of the language and descriptive writing. We are sure that as the year continues, we will see more opportunities to bring stories to life through both drama and art.
